Stay Clear of Windows Vista...for now.

Just 104 applications have been certified to run under Windows Vista, according to an update published on Microsoft's Web site.

Version 1.2 of Microsoft's list, dated Thursday, lists 104 apps that have earned the "Certified for Windows Vista" logo. Of those, 23 are Microsoft applications, meaning just 81 third-party apps have earned the Vista logo.

AMD Quad-core Processor Coming...

The quad-core front, New AMD Quad-Core Opteron (Barcelona) will be soon releasing in the next quarter of the year. Natively designed with new micro-architecture, the chip maker claimed the new processors will out-perform its rival by up to 40 per cent. Having checked on the releasing plan, the maximum speed of Barcelona in first release has only got 2.3GHz. The plan clearly states that the maximum speed of the whole series till Q208 would be a bit faster to 2.6GHz only. Could these new AMD quad-core Opteron defect its rival at this low speed is being questioned?

The next-generation AMD quad-core Opteron, codenamed Barcelona and fabricated by 65nm manufacturing technology, is natively designed with 4 functioning cores, each of them owns 512KB L2 Cache and share the same 2MB L3 Cache. Barcelona supports for 128Bit FPU and provides a capability of up to 4 FLOPS/clock. The interface remains in Socket F (1207), and therefore it’s compatible to the existing Socket F platforms.

Minibot Performs Surgery From the Inside Out

Boy, this sounds pleasant. Researchers in Japan have developed a Minibot that enters your body via an incision. It's then controlled from the outside while it performs surgery on you. It has forceps to take tissue samples, can deliver medicine, and take pictures. Most previous mini robots designed for your insides could only take pictures; this is the first to actually be proactive once inside. So what do you think? Would you rather have a doc slicing and dicing from the outside in, or would you be OK having a tiny robot swimming around your insides doing all the work instead? I can't really imagine the feeling of having a robot inside me, but I guess in the long run it would be better to have the most minimally invasive surgery possible.

How to Survive a Heart Attack Alone

Since many people are alone when they suffer a heart attack, this article seemed in order.) Without help the person whose heart stops beating properly and who begins to feel Faint, has only about 10 seconds left before losing consciousness. However, these victims can help themselves by coughing repeatedly and very vigorously. A deep breath should be taken before each cough, and the cough must be deep and prolonged, as when producing sputum from deep inside the chest. A breath and a cough must be repeated about every two seconds without let up until help arrives, or until the heart is felt to be beating normally again. Deep breaths get oxygen into the lungs and coughing movements squeeze the heart and keep the blood circulating.

The squeezing pressure on the heart also helps it regain normal rhythm. In this way, heart attack victims can get to a phone and, between breaths, call for help.

Observing the Sabbath...Saturday or Sunday?

With Lynn and Melvin's wedding preparation behind us last Saturday, I want to thank all those who are in town to help in the preparation for the wedding event...especially for Jerrie's expertise in creating a new process to plug bean sprouts!

Whereas for I, I prove to all that bean sprouts can after be cut with a knife...though not efficiently. Anyway, Sus and Jerrie tasted their fast claypot fried rice that night while all of us chip in to help this very new couple (that we hardly know) have a memorable wedding day.

Anyway, we are coming together as before this Friday and the topic on the table is "Observing the Sabbath". Some say its a particular day we can especially pay attention to (while believeing a special blessings awaits), while some others say that every day is to be carefully observed like a sabbath day.

The pharisees of old claims zero physical work on that day, the Lord promises to bless those who "keep" it in Isaiah 56:2, in addition to many other views searchable in the Bible. What then is your view in this?

Your Next Mode of Transportation?

Electric tricycles seem to be a growing trend, and we can now add this VentureOne to that list. This one gives you a choice of either all-electric or hybrid power. It leans when you turn, can reach 0-60 in 6 seconds and goes 100mph with an impressive 100mpg fuel efficiency. Perhaps the most startling of all is its price, $18,000 for the hybrid drive Venture E50, up to $23,000 for the all-electric drive Venture EV.

Lockheed Martin Quiet Supersonic Transport: From New York to LA in 2 Hours, Quietly

You can now fly cross-country in USA within 2 hours, that is, if you can ever get your hands on a Lockheed Martin Quiet Supersonic Transport (QSST)—a 12 person luxury plane that can hit over 1,100 MPH. But unlike its daddy, the Concord, this plane can muffle its sonic boom to 1/100 the strength. That means you won't be limited to flying over the ocean, so you can take this baby across the country without disturbing anyone.

The way the QSST is able to keep itself so quiet lies in its aerodynamics. Instead of creating two large booms like most supersonic planes, the QSST is designed to create many smaller ones. (boom, boom boom, boom, boom.)

Jerrie to Lead in Addressing the Role of a Church in a Local Community

Our dear South African brother has shown interest to steer a discussion on the above topic and we hope to do so when our usual Friday SF meeting resume.

I am pretty sure this is but the beginning where individual members spontaneously take each SF session to cover topics (of any nature) and direct the discussion of personal/group interest to the glory of God.

Keep it comin'!

Good Business Trip to Malaysia

Yes, for the past one month, I have been going in and out of Malaysia for business and I am pleased to say it is finally completed for the six cities I visited. And I want to thank God that He has helped me to accomplish this project on time.

Nevertheless, I will continue to move on to Thailand, Philippines, Indonesia, India, USA and finally China to continue this implementation until it be done in June. Meanwhile, I understand some of us are also traveling out this coming month to Hong Kong, USA etc. So, let's remember each other in our daily prayer.

O yes, Gong Xi Fa Cai to all!!!

Our Blog has been Upgraded!

With the ever updates in the IT scene, our blog has undergone yet another upgrade in the user-friendliness, speed of access etc. So, you may have noticed that some of the formatting and layout has been changed.

No worry, it will be back to her normal "shape" soon enough as I tidy up the backend...

Cheers.

New Year's Steamboat at John's Residence

John has graciously invited the SF to his place this coming Saturday for a steamboat dinner and it's going to be wonderful experience for those who can make it. As it's also the lunar new year eve for the chinese, you can call it a reunion dinner - SF style.

For those who needs direction and location of his apartment, please contact John directly.

In view of that, we will not have an SF session this Friday. HC has also rallied our help next Friday to help in the church for a wedding the following day and that will be a wonderful opportunity to reach out, and create that sphere of fellowship with other church members then. More details to follow for that...

I - God's Masterpiece

To strengthen what was discussed at last SF, we have on today's sermon - Discovering a Purposedful Masterpiece message that reinforce what we shared.

As the new year spirit still lingers for a short moment more, we believe the family has grown significantly in bond, spiritual maturity and age in 2006! John just turned half a century old! Robert and Reba became grandparents. Lani got married. Wow! Yes, its also an excellent time to focus on a new area of need - Increasing the personal influence of ourselves to our church. As you know, our church consists of many friends who are neither in His kingdom nor belonged to a SF. This, are people who perhaps come for a moment, and left because no one cared.

I believe only when we review and recognize how and what God has realistically help us do to touch lives or influenced an event for His glory, that we can then transit from a foggy path to a crystal clear confidence to live.

1. God has a purpose for you (Destiny)
2. God has a preparation for you (Design)
3. God has a path for you (Direction)

Palm OS - 0 | Windows Mobile 6 - 1

In 1990s, Palm was the icon in functionality, direct usage, and simplicity. I am sure you can recall PalmPilot 1000 (which I have the pleasure of owning one). But when 2000s came, the race for a more superior OS for mobile smartphones heated with the chase by Windows Mobile (by William Gates) and I say, they have scored home with the new release of their 5th generation of cutting edge mobile OS for PDA and smartphones.

I am still sticking to my Symbian OS S80 in Nokia 9300i for now, primarily for superior multitasking and connectivity flexibility and battery endurance. But who knows...it can anyone's game now.

Here are some highlights of upcoming Windows Mobile 6:

  • HTML-formatted e-mails from POP, IMAP, and Exchange Server 2007
  • Full integration with Windows Live (Search, Mail, Space, Messenger), including a Windows Mobile-based client
  • Automatic synchronization of Outlook calendars and contacts through Exchange Server due to the inclusion of Direct Push on all Windows Mobile 6 devices
  • New Microsoft Office Mobile, which allows users to view and even edit documents on the device while retaining formatting, including tables and images
  • 30% improvement in speed for Internet Explorer Mobile
  • Faster and easier set up of the device
  • Easy syncing of pictures, music, etc., from Windows Vista-powered PCs to the device
  • Enhanced Calendar functionality, including "Calendar ribbon," which gives users a more understandable at a glance view, and the ability to see who is attending a meeting and even forward or reply to a meeting from the device itself
  • Additional Call History and Contacts integration allows you to instantly see the contact's information when dialing and get to the information you need quicker
  • Improved security, including remote management and wiping of a device and protected/encrypted content

Nokia E90 Rare Glimpse

The first pictures of the Nokia E90 just hit the 'net and, if you have the patience to look at really blurry shots, you'll find out a few things. If the pics are real (we won't really know until next week's 3GSM conference), we can look forward to a fold out type cellphone, like the Nokia 9500. In addition to the pics, we've got a good idea as to what the specs will be: 3.2-megapixel camera, EDGE, Wi-Fi and HSDPA (woo!). The phone's two screens impress as well, with the external one coming in at 240 x 320 and the internal one at 800 x 352.

Got to have geek wish list...

Dell Laptop Burns Man's House Down, Not Battery's Fault

A malfunctioning Dell laptop caused a man's house to burn down. Yup, some dude in Maine found out that his Dell Inspiron 1200 started a fire while he was at work. Even though the guy lost pretty much everything, calling it a "total loss," Dell's oh-so-helpful representatives have so far refused to take any action. And no, this has nothing to do with that whole Batterrygate scandal from last year since the guy's laptop wasn't on the recall list.

How can I reduce my risk of developing heart disease and having a heart attack?

The most common disease of the heart is called coronary artery disease. This disease is also known as atherosclerosis or hardening of the arteries. Coronary arteries provide oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart to keep it pumping strongly. Over time, fatty deposits called plaque can build up inside the coronary arteries. When the build-up of plaque narrows the arteries so much that only a small amount of blood can flow through to the heart, chest pain (also known as angina) can occur. Sometimes, a blood clot will completely block the blood flow to a coronary artery causing a heart attack – a true medical emergency.

You can reduce your risk of developing heart disease by understanding the risk factors that can cause it and by making the necessary changes. At least 80% of Canadians have at least one risk factor. The more risk factors you have, the greater your risk of developing heart disease or having a heart attack.

Risk factors you can change:

Your heart health depends a lot on the lifestyle you choose. If you're aware of the risk factors you can change, you can make changes that will help reduce your risk of developing heart disease.

The risks

The changes

Smoking

Stop smoking.

High-fat diet

Limit your fat intake.

Abnormal blood cholesterol levels

Keep your levels within acceptable limits.

Inactive lifestyle

Try moderate exercise 30-60 minutes per day.

Aim for a BMI of 18.5-24.9.

Excess fat around the stomach

Aim for a waist measurement that is less than 35 inches for women and 40 inches for men.

High stress levels

Take time to relax every day.

High blood pressure

Have your blood pressure monitored regularly and take medication as prescribed.

Diabetes

Keep your blood sugar levels under control.

SF Meeting - 2 Feb 2007

A short report from Chris for last week's SF - "We had a good time tonight at Robert's place. HC was down with a flu, she couldn't be able to open her place for meeting and join us. Nigel and Jenny have to work late, also couldn't come. Mr Ban would like to join us after dinner, but eventually didn't turn up, may be tied- up with other things suddenly. Gerry will only be back tomorrow, so only Sus has come.

We had dinner, prepared by John, Reba and Hau Chun. As usual, we enjoyed the food very much. Douglas had his first taste of potato salad which he kept asking for more. So at the end of the night, he knocked off without having any milk, which is very unusual for him. Douglas was scared by Robert's donkey, which is a soft toy programmed to talk and sing. And he was pretty occupied tonight by a toy car and a happy meal toy during our sharing. Basically, it was the best evening he behaved during the SF meeting so far this year.

After dinner, we were moved to the living area to share, the topic we shared tonight was "What is the Most Unforgettable Things you have experienced with God". John shared on his salvation. Brain and Daisy shared on their very personal stuff (not disclosed here) and Brian's father within 6 weeks. Sus shared on the mircale she had experienced which science cannot be explained, Reba shared on her missing flight back to S'pore in the last trip, Daisy shared on behalf of Helena on the love of God has shown through her even though she was deserted by her parents when she was young. I shared how God brought me back to Him after I was being back slided during my uni days. We ended at 10:30pm and yet we can still have some more to share. We could probably have this topic in Part 2 next week. Of course, it's only a suggestion.

FYI, Brain will be going to Beijing this sunday for 5 days. Robert need to work next weekend for 1 of the day."

Around Us in Christiandom

Being shielded from a what's happening to the christians around us, I cam across a site that meaningfully presents a slice of reality to how they are living in other countries.

Purpose - To expand our depth and purpose in prayer for God's people. Survey has shown that many christians today (including myself) typicall spend a large part of their prayer life praying for their own self and immediate families.

This [link] seek to complete a wider scope of the reality of christian living in less privileged countries.

VPN Setup Completed in Kedah and KL Malaysia

The setup with two new VPN tunnels have been completed in the above two sites, with positive user feedback where a significant speed boost in accessing the MK ERP server is observed.

Nevertheless, broadband speed for both sites confirms a far slower than expected bandwidth that is currently paid for by both sides. Penang's monthly Internet access fee currently stands at RM688 monthly (2mbps). An official report has been launched to local ISP - Tmnet to obtain technical assistance to speed up Internet access in Penang.

A report will be created for each site whereby user sign off is expected to mark the official completion of each site.

Download of the Day: Mailredirect (Thunderbird)

All platforms running Thunderbird: T-bird extension Mailredirect redirects ("bounces" or forwards without the FWD) multiple messages at once to another email address. You can export an IMAP email account managed in Thunderbird to Gmail, and mailredirect was perfect for sending off the messages you wanted at the new address. Select all the messages you want to send off and choose Redirect from the Tools menu, and watch the progress as the mass mailing goes. The original messages' dates and times are preserved, as well. Mailredirect is a free download, and works with and wherever Thunderbird does.

Windows vs Linux Server

"Many millions of words have been written and said on this topic. The basic argument goes like this. In its long evolution, Windows has grown so complicated that it is harder to secure. Well these images make the point very well".

The attached image represent a map of system calls that occur when a web server serves a single HTML page with a picture. The same page and picture have been used on both servers for the purpose of testing. A system call is an opportunity to address memory. A hacker investigates each memory access to see if it is vulnerable to a buffer overflow attack. The developer must do QA on each of these entry points. The more system calls, the greater potential for vulnerability, the more effort needed to create secure applications.

The resulting images were generated by Sana Security. The first image is of the system calls that occur on a Windows server running IIS; while the second is of a Linux Server running Apache. The images speak for themselves.

Micro Compact Home: Trailer Park Living With That Euro Design Flair

You think your house is small? Get a load of this 8.5-foot cube, the Micro Compact Home (m-ch). Even though its interior is a bit cramped, its architects tried to overcome that claustrophobic feeling with luxo-sport Euro design and plenty of windows. It's a lot cheaper than a regular house, too, selling for between US$32,500 and US$44,225. Sure, the designers believe in that "less is more" principle, but it's hard to imagine spending much time in this little aluminum-clad wooden doghouse. There are two tiny double beds in there, along with a table that can supposedly seat five, a shower, toilet and a kitchen, plus it's heated and air-conditioned.

Any buyer?
