VPN Setup Completed in Penang and Ipoh Malaysia

The setup with two new VPN tunnels have been completed in the above two sites, with positive user feedback where a significant speed boost in accessing the MK ERP server is observed.

Nevertheless, broadband speed for both sites confirms a far slower than expected bandwidth that is currently paid for by both sides. Penang's monthly Internet access fee currently stands at RM688 monthly (2mbps). An official report has been launched to local ISP - Tmnet to obtain technical assistance to speed up Internet access in Penang.

The upcoming two sites - Sungei pertani and KL is scheduled to be completed by the 7 Feb 2006...one day ahead of schedule.

A report will be created for each site whereby user sign off is expected to mark the official completion of each site.

SF Will Still Be As Usual This Friday

I will be making a ten days trip to Malaysia, with an ongoing project for a client, but the meeting this friday will remain on this Friday regardless.

Trust our last meeting that talked about from where we are from broke the ice between our new friend, Sus and all of us. I was personally intrigued by the rich history and number of national languages of South Africa - 11 of them!

Please pray for John's persistent cough, Reba's recovery from a recent fall, and a renewed passion to discover and experience God in our lives this new year.

As for me, the mere working for a living aside, I see two new interest area where God is currently leading me towards...using my Business IT skills in a mission field in China (for a christian book chains) and a role to minister to God's people, in strengthening their hearts to grow in confidence in walking with Him. Do pray for our SF as we balance fellowship and biblical emphasis in the family.

When Should You Upgrade To Vista? When Vista SP1 Is Released During 2nd Half of 07

For business, cautious, or cautious business users, upgrading their OS is nothing to be done on a Thursday night after work and forgotten about. For those people, it's going to be a smart idea to wait until Vista Service Pack 1 is released before switching from XP.

Not only is SP1 going to bring fixes, "Fiji" (the codename) is going to have OS components that missed the cutoff for release. Among them is Windows PowerShell, a command line shell more powerful than old timey "cmd".

As a refresher, Win XP took 11 months to release their SP1, which if Vista were to follow this timeline, would have its SP1 released in December. Undoubtedly, Microsoft will want an earlier release to lure the business cautious users into upgrading. For early adopters (like us), home users, and the adventurous, December is just too long to wait.

Japan's Treo Killer

The United States may have the Treos and Blackberries, but the Willcom phones are all the rage in Japan for all-in-one smartphone solutions. The latest update in Willcom's series is the WX321J smartphone. This does it all and a bag of tricks: biometrics, 1.3-megapixel camera, microSD expandability, MS Office suite support, POP, SMTP and other e-mail support. Sorry folks, it is Japan-only, but doesn't it look purty in an oversized and crowded sort of way?

Japan Watch: Perfect Three-Minute Pasta Gadget

We've been making spaghetti the retarded way for years, but we should have known the Japanese thought up a better, and faster, way of doing everything. First, grab this gadget. Then, all you have to do is stick in the pasta, some salt, and pour in boiled water. Cap it, wait for three minutes, and you're all done. Sure you have to boil water separately, but if you've got a hot water boiler then you're set. Pasta4Life!

CNet Checks Out Windows Vista: Stable, but No OS X Killer

The folks at CNET have given Windows Vista Ultimate a thorough testing. Their verdict? Buy it if it's already installed on a new PC, but skip it if you're merely upgrading. Though they found MS' new OS very stable, they felt there weren't enough new features in it to merit an upgrade. Also, chances are if you do upgrade, you'll need a stronger PC to take advantage of the new features. In other words, that old, dusty Dell ain't gonna cut it.

Yes, Brian and Daisy is always on their honeymoon...and this time round, its Taiwan they visited (Brian is there to work). Anyway, I trust it all to be well and refreshing (more for Daisy that is).

As you know, Brian is a mighty workhorse whom seldom stops for refuel and we pray his health is maintained with occasional tennis playing!

One more thing...it was a joy to see Brian's friends (a HK couple) over at the Chinese Construction Ministry some two weeks ago and it wonderful to see our effort to reach out as a focus for our SF! (So, keep it comin'!)

The Story Behind - It is Well with My Soul

This beloved gospel hymn text's author, Horatio Gates Spafford, had known peaceful and happy days as a successful young attorney in Chicago, Illinois. He was the father of four lovely daughters, a deeply spiritual and devoted student of the Scriptures, and a loyal supporter and friend of D. L. Moody and many of the other evangelical leaders of his day. Then he experienced a series of calamities, beginning with the Great Chicago Fire of 1871, which wiped out much of the family's real estate investments.

Two years later, when Moody and Ira Sankey left for Great Britain to conduct an evangelistic crusade, Spafford decided to lift the spirits of his family by taking them on a vacation to Europe. He also planned to assist with the Moody-Sankey meetings. Interestingly, it is reported that shortly before leaving, the family attended a service in Chicago where Moody was preaching. At that meeting all four Spafford girls made personal professions of Christ as Savior.

In November of 1873, at the time of the family's scheduled departure, Horatio was detained unexpectedly by some urgent business matters, but he sent his wife and four daughters as planned on the S.S. Ville du Havre, promising to join them shortly in Europe. Halfway across the Atlantic Ocean, the ship was struck by an English vessel and sank in twelve minutes. All four of the Spafford daughters--Tanetta, Maggie, Annie, and Bessie--were among the 226 passengers who drowned. Mrs. Spafford was one of the few who were miraculously rescued. As Horatio was busily packing, there was a knock at the door, and he was handed a cable which read simply: "Saved alone. Your wife."

Horatio Spafford spent hour after hour on the deck of the ship carrying him to rejoin his sorrowing wife in Cardiff, Wales. It is said that when the ship passed the approximate area where his precious daughters had drowned, Spafford received sustaining comfort from God that enabled him to respond, "When sorrows like sea billows roll--whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, it is well with my soul."

Philip P. Bliss, a prolific writer of early gospel music, was so impressed with the experience and expression of Spafford's text that he soon composed the well-suited music. The hymn was first published in 1876 in one of the Sankey-Bliss hymnals, Gospel Hymns Number Two. It still ministers mightily.

Ask yourself if you can say with Horatio Spafford, "It is well with my soul", no matter what may be the circumstances that God allows.

Install and run Ubuntu without disturbing Windows

Want to take Linux for a spin? Forget partitions, dual-boot setups and live CDs: The new Ubuntu Windows installer lets you run the Linux distro while keeping the rest of your system intact. In other words, it's like a live CD without the CD. Just run the installer, which in turn downloads a disk image of Ubuntu (actually, your choice of four Ubuntu distros), and then reboot your PC. Choose the desired boot option from the menu that appears, and presto: You're running Linux. This is a working prototype, not a finished product, so user beware. It didn't work on my Vista box (I discovered after the fact that Vista isn't supported yet), but it ran like a gem on an XP system. Great way to run Ubuntu without the hassles of partitioning or burning a live CD!

Getting to Know our Missionaries - Part I

In 2007, I would like to take a few article space to introduce our home-breed missionaries. Much has changed but a little history wouldn't hurt.

INDONESIA
Kamal Gideon with his son Ezra came to our church some six years ago. Being a former Muslim, he was saved in his early twenties. He was instrumental in the growth of the Indonesian/East Malaysian ministries where Pottershed ministry is formed to train workers to serve in the local campuses there. Much work is still needed today in the campus ministry where many new students gather in Yogyakarta (University Centre of Indonesia) annually to study.

He has recently moved to Batam Island where fresh work began there for the Lord.

Top 10 Detox Foods

As 2007 swings into gear, there's no better time to give your body a healthy, fresh start than now! Plus if you're thinking about lowering your weight, add these 10 foods to your grocery cart and you'll get three terrific benefits:

- Lots of super-healthy liquids to flush out the body while pouring in nutrients.
- Fiber to keep your GI tract fit.
- Foods that energize cleansing enzymes in the liver, your body's built-in detox center.

The top 10:

1. Green leafy vegetables. Eat them raw, throw them into a broth, add them to juices. Their chlorophyll helps swab out environmental toxins (heavy metals, pesticides) and is an all-round liver protector.
2. Lemons. You need to keep the fluids flowing to wash out the body and fresh lemonade is ideal. Its vitamin C - considered the detox vitamin - helps convert toxins into a water - soluble form that?s easily flushed away.
3. Watercress. Put a handful into salads, soups, and sandwiches. The peppery little green leaves have a diuretic effect that helps move things through your system. And cress is rich in minerals too.
4. Garlic. Add it to everything - salads, sauces, spreads. In addition to the bulb's cardio benefits, it activates liver enzymes that help filter out junk.
5. Green tea. This antioxidant-rich brew is one of the healthiest ways to get more fluids into your system. Bonus: It contains catechins, which speed up liver activity.
6. Broccoli sprouts. Get 'em at your health-food store. They pack 20 to 50 times more cancer-fighting, enzyme-stimulating activity into each bite than the grown-up vegetable.
7. Sesame seeds. They're credited with protecting liver cells from the damaging effects of alcohol and other chemicals. For a concentrated form, try tahini, the yummy sesame seed paste that?s a staple of Asian cooking.
8. Cabbage. There are two main types of detoxifying enzymes in the liver; this potent veggie helps activate both of them. Coleslaw, anyone?
9. Psyllium. A plant that?s rich in soluble fiber, like oat bran, but more versatile. It mops up toxins (cholesterol too) and helps clear them out. Stir powdered psyllium into juice to help cleanse your colon, or have psyllium-fortified Bran Buds for breakfast.
10. Fruits, fruits, fruits. They're full of almost all the good things above - vitamin C, fiber, nutritious fluids, and all kinds of antioxidants. Besides, nothing tastes better than a ripe mango, fresh berries, or a perfect pear.

Prayer Items for Week 2 - 2007

Breadmaking techniques and knowhow became the highlight of yesterday's discussion as we tasted the hard work of John across the dinner table. But most importantly, some of us made a few new year resolutions and shared their focus for this new year.

Supporting one another in prayer is one of the focus on our family this year and here's some that was shared last night to remember each other

1. John to successfully clinch real estate deals as market heats up
2. Ban for wisdom in managing his food business
3. HC for possibility of retirement and a second career
4. Law for wisdom to turn his business profit to have a greater emphasis to help evangelistic work
5. Chris to balance music and family better
6. Reba for safety, guidance in making her way back to welcome her grand child
7. Robert to have good success in plant startup
8. Jenny's safe delivery in March
9. Brian and family health and upcoming trip to HK
10. Lani for blessing in a new chapter of her life

For Car Owners and Drivers...

Here are some tips to improve fuel efficiency:

1. When you reach a red traffic light, instead of braking, take your foot off the accelerator and let the car slow down to reach the traffic lights. I'm aware that sometimes the car behind might not be aware you are slowing down, so lightly touch the brake to flash the brake lights, and then take your foot off the brake, accelerator and clutch and simply let the car glide to a stop.

2. Don't speed. The faster you go, the more fuel you use in to cover the same distance. Every car has an optimal speed where the engine is at it's most efficient. Go to the manufacturer's web-site and find out the optimal efficient speed for your car and stick to it. It's dangerous going over 30mph in a city environment anyway, so don't. On a motorway, just because the speed limit is 70mph, you don't have to drive at that fast. Stick to about 50-60mph and sit on the inside lane with the lorries, and ignore all the people speeding past you. If they are happy to literally burn money, let them. This will need some planning, as driving at a lower speed means that the journey will take longer, so you may need to leave the house earlier.

3. Get your car serviced - dirty air filters and oil that hasn't been changed reduces fuel efficiency.

4. Make sure your tire pressure is correct, check it regularly. The lower your tire pressure, the more the engine has to work to drag the car along.

5. Don't carry heavy loads. The lighter the car, the less fuel it uses. Spend some time clearing junk from the car. Don't keep roof-racks on if you don't need them.

6. Air conditioning decreases fuel efficiency. Unfortunately leaving your windows down creates drag that also reduces fuel efficiency. The only way to get round this is to try not to drive in the hottest parts of the day, when your air conditioning needs will be highest. Park in cool spots to keep the car cool (shaded multi-story car-parks are the best bet in summer as the car won't heat up at all).

7. Drive in the correct gear, if you are using a manual car.

8. Some people tend to have their foot always over the clutch lightly depressing it which driving. Don't. Only depress the clutch when your foot is off the accelerator.

9. Make fewer journeys - instead of popping to the supermarket every couple of days, do big shops occasionally. This too demands prior organisation.

Lani Weds Today!

Though it seems to have happened all of a sudden, let's take today to offer a brief moment of happiness for the newly wed in the home town of Indonesia. I have no idea where it actually is and if she will drop by to say hello anytime soon.

Anyway, a prayer for them to live as a shining testimony as a couple would be helpful...

What About Us?

So, if our focus is all about others, you may wonder what's for our care? What about bible studies? What about my needs? Haha...of course, they will still be taken care of! You see, typical SF members still, despite numerous sharing, need to know alway that our own shame is to the glory of God! Our weakness to the elevating of God's working through us.

The day of true fellowship will come in all of us when Mr. Ban can share with me his recent experience of a conman who successfully sold him a car! True fellowship crosses geographical boundaries and race and upbringing and culture where there is a love to encourage one another with how your live has been a glorifying or refined one this week...not smiley faces with an empty heart on the dinner table.

Or perhaps, we are so dried up from that spring and source of our spiritual well-being that there is nothing (in true sincerity) to even speak of God's dealing with us this fine week! Too busy, earning that reputation, too busy meeting some deadline, too busy for someone else in the family...

Is that your focus in Christ this 2007?

Focus of SF 2007

As you already have heard, many new visitors to our church last year are friends from like-minded churches on the island. And they are here to possibly find a place where they can get comfortable....of course not, but to be aligned with the church and find their true calling in service.

Well, if you ask around you this Sunday, I am pretty sure you can find someone who fits that category. SF as mentioned before is not a mini church and will not attempt to mimick like one. Our role is more personal and down to earth, with the focus to build trust, relationship with people we don't necessary know! So, I am sure you know what I mean...go out there and build a new relationship with a stranger preiodically over a lunch. If you ask me, its like the role of what Pastor usually do each Sunday. But I don't think we should rely just on a few persons in the whole church to do it.

Pray before going forward and do not fear as they are just ordinary human beings! Keep you eyes peeled for one to talk to...

When we meet next week, let's do a story telling session how we did! God bless.

Pitch Black Restaurant Opens in Beijing

No, not Vin Diesel Pitch Black, unfortunately—this is a restaurant that invites the consumers to eat in total darkness. It opened on December 23 as part of the Blind-Liecht foundation.

All illuminating devices such as cellphones and watches are strictly forbidden and the employees work with night-vision goggles. So the food may taste better, but the burns on your tongue would hurt even more. The Beijing restaurant is the latest addition to this chain of dark restaurants—others are located all over the world. Man, night vision goggles are freaking sweet. And imagine if you got to work in those everyday.

Cool or just plain stupid?

Time to Ditch your Laptop Drive?

SanDisk is looking to replace that spinning, power-hungry hard drive in your laptop with a 1.8-inch solid state 32GB flash drive. The company says its cool-running SSD Ultra ATA 5000 1.8" drive is a drop-in replacement for those old-fashioned mechanical hard disks. It packs the performance, too, with a 62MB-per-second read speed while using less than half the battery power of conventional discs.

Its most impressive spec is its random read rate of 7300 inputs and outputs per second, 100 times faster than most hard disks, letting the thing boot Microsoft Windows Vista in 35 seconds. That's about 28 seconds faster than a garden-variety hard disk can do. It's much smaller than the 2.5-inch 32GB flash drive Samsung introduced last March, but it's still rather pricey, adding around $600 to a laptop in which it resides. Going out to equipment manufacturers now, the company says we'll be seeing notebooks with this drive inside by the middle of this year.

In a round of network scanning for threats and bandwidth abusers, a total of six users have been identified to be hogging the use of Internet to unauthorized, non work-related web sites. A warning has been issued to two of them.

Upon the use of an official vulnerability scanner server on the site, abusers will automatically be flagged out daily to the MIS department for immediate attention.

This abuser was found to have been the root cause of causing the slow VPN access to MK ERP server.

SOCKS Access Error with MK ERP

Due to the poor phone line condition of unrepaired Singtel phone exchange and recent damaged AP submarine cables, the stability of the Internet is assessed to be approximately back to 65 percent of the original state. Pinging of international web sites are still experiencing 35% dropped packets.

SOCKS error attributed with the recent MK users are associated with the above event, in addition to how the aging MK server software operates on the new Microsoft Windows 2003 Server OS. Itis also known that the use of a "patch" software to allow a larger than allowed user pool to access the MK server pose unknown stability issue among the two sites. SOCKS in MK Server is suspected to be of version 4 or lower and has not be endorsed in Microsoft Windows Server 2003. SOCKS are typically used in server client solution to enforce user-level and application-level access control in LAN. Erratic behavior experienced by client can also be attributed to the "limited patch" applied to the new MK instance.

From the hardware department, it is strongly encouraged to have suitable replacement of aging network switches and an upgrade to the slow upload link of the Cisco 877 in HQ.

The deployed Cisco IPSec VPN do not include SOCKS layer components and is treated transparently to the two connected sites.

HQ ADSL 2mbps Needs Synchronous 2mbps Uplink

With a new site at Malacca going live for IPSec VPN, the encrypted traffic load back to HQ is increasing, implying a need to review the current slow 384kbps upload capability of this ADSL plan.

A review will be performed on both vendor's and client's side to confirm the upgrade price plan. The new upgraded plan of synchronous 2mbps will ensure a fast and capable VPN link to a total of 15 sites concurrently, giving each site a minimal 128kbps uplink speed.

The New Five Pillars of Church

OK. Half time and I thought it be a good idea to just lay it in digital ink where our church is heading. Basically, the refined five pillars are now

1. worship
2. warmth
3. watchfulness
4. work
5. witness

It was a session of questions and answers really, as the Pastors spell out in greater details what each of the above meant. More "interest group" SFs will soon form to blanket the whole church, in attempt to cater to more folks' needs. Some fear a poor direction of such groups may simply lead to interest-oriented activities while some believe such comprehensive "coverage" will meet these people's need. Again, its a tussle between committment level among church-goers. Some believe committments come with catering to the more "interesting" needs of congregation while some believe the "christian migrants" (from other churches) should properly understand and take up church membership systematically to gain growing committed pool of workers.

All said, Pastor Mike/Paul hit a very fundamental truth - our motive is to always be focused in building relationship wherever we may be, and not dogmatic programs and formal agenda to increase church statistics. That, I totally agree.

According to statistics, we have more inter-church migrants in 2006, accounting for more than 60% of the growth, meaning we have many "believers" added into our midst and much less true converts. This trend will only grow.

Goal of SF again? Our SF's is to witness to the lost, identify the true gifts in each believing member and liberate them into physical, spiritual efforts and areas of service in our church that will advance the kingdom of God in our vicinity.
