SOCKS Access Error with MK ERP

Due to the poor phone line condition of unrepaired Singtel phone exchange and recent damaged AP submarine cables, the stability of the Internet is assessed to be approximately back to 65 percent of the original state. Pinging of international web sites are still experiencing 35% dropped packets.

SOCKS error attributed with the recent MK users are associated with the above event, in addition to how the aging MK server software operates on the new Microsoft Windows 2003 Server OS. Itis also known that the use of a "patch" software to allow a larger than allowed user pool to access the MK server pose unknown stability issue among the two sites. SOCKS in MK Server is suspected to be of version 4 or lower and has not be endorsed in Microsoft Windows Server 2003. SOCKS are typically used in server client solution to enforce user-level and application-level access control in LAN. Erratic behavior experienced by client can also be attributed to the "limited patch" applied to the new MK instance.

From the hardware department, it is strongly encouraged to have suitable replacement of aging network switches and an upgrade to the slow upload link of the Cisco 877 in HQ.

The deployed Cisco IPSec VPN do not include SOCKS layer components and is treated transparently to the two connected sites.
